The 2 Second Challenge

So what is the 2 second challenge and why is every online marketer obsessed with it?

When a marketer looks at the digital world, he sees a lot of opportunities. There are hundreds of millions of people who are online and who are willing to spend their money online for the right products. Its a marketer’s paradise, or is it?

When a marketer wants to target a customer, he literally has 2 seconds and sometimes even less.

When a person is on the internet, and browsing, the attention span is really really small. Some say that it is lesser than 5 seconds. Now when he realises that he is being shown an Ad or promotion, that attention span diminishes drastically. So a marketer needs to understand a lot of things about the person to whom the Ad is being displayed. For e.g. what is the personality of the person, what is his current mood, what is his spending pattern, where is he browsing (platform) and so on. A good understanding of this will lead a marketer to show the apt message and thus make the most effective suggestions in the 2 second window. All this, just to get the right action from the online persona that is being targeted.

This is the entire crux of online marketing. Thousands of books have been written and hundreds of concepts have been researched and tested and applied, just to get the action from the potential consumer.
